Hey there! I’m Matthew Miller, and I’m thrilled you’ve found your way to my corner of Score Michigan. As a born-and-raised Michigander, I’ve made it my mission to capture the heart and soul of our great state through my writing and photography.
My Michigan Story
My love affair with Michigan began in the pine forests of the Upper Peninsula, where I spent summers camping with my family. Those early adventures sparked a curiosity that’s driven me ever since. After honing my craft in the Journalism program at Michigan State University (Go Green!), I set out to tell the stories that make our state unique.
What I Write About
My articles are a bit like Michigan itself – diverse, surprising, and always interesting. Here’s what you can expect:
- Local Flavor: I’m constantly on the hunt for the best pasties in the U.P., the quirkiest festivals in small-town Michigan, and the hidden history in our big cities.
- Great Outdoors: Whether it’s kayaking the Pictured Rocks, skiing in Traverse City, or fishing on Lake St. Clair, I’m there – notebook in hand.
- Food & Drink: From Detroit’s iconic coney dogs to the burgeoning craft beer scene in Grand Rapids, I’m eating and sipping my way across the state (tough job, but someone’s got to do it!).
- Off the Beaten Path: I have a knack for finding those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spots that make Michigan special. Prepare for some detours!
- Sports Scene: Lion, Tiger, Red Wing, or Piston – I cover it all, plus the local heroes making waves in high school and college sports.
The Personal Touch
I believe the best stories come from real connections. That’s why you’ll often find me chatting with local shop owners, swapping tales with fellow hikers, or cheering alongside die-hard fans at a game. These moments of genuine Michigan life are what I strive to bring to my writing.
A Few Feathers in My Cap
I’ve been fortunate to receive some recognition for my work, including awards from the Michigan Press Photographers Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. But honestly, the real reward is sharing Michigan’s stories with readers like you.
