About Michigan Rehabilitation Services

MRS (Michigan Rehabilitation Services) can assist you in preparing for and obtaining employment. They can assist you with obtaining the training or other services you require to return to work, change careers, stay in the workforce, or enter the workforce for the first time. The vocational rehabilitation services provided by MRS are tailored to your specific strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, talents, capacities, and interests. An MRS counselor will work with you to figure out these issues and develop a strategy for achieving your professional objectives.

You must have a physical or mental differently abled that makes it difficult for you to find and hold a job to be eligible for MRS services. If your disability qualifies you for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you are likely eligible for MRS.

MRS can be your Ticket to Work service provider, or you may be eligible for MRS services even if you are not enrolled in the Ticket program.

Note: If you get Ticket to Work assistance via MRS, your MRS case will normally be closed after 90 days of successful employment. If this happens, you must transfer your Ticket to an Employment Network to continue receiving continuous support services.

How to Apply for Michigan Rehabilitation Services?

Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) exists to assist persons with impairments in finding and keeping acceptable jobs.

If you meet the following criteria, you may be eligible for MRS services:

• You are differently abled and that makes it difficult for you to find or retain a job; and

• you may need MRS assistance to succeed in finding or keeping a job.

When you apply for assistance, a vocational rehabilitation counselor will do the following:

• Assist you in determining an acceptable job objective.

• Assist you in determining the services required to meet your employment objectives.

• Assist with service delivery and coordination.

• Assist with addressing employment needs once employed to ensure that you are able to keep your job.

Types of Michigan Rehabilitation Services.

MRS Transition Student Services and Services for Pre-Employment Transition.

In Michigan, students with disabilities aged 14 to 26 who have been accepted or enrolled in secondary or higher education can receive Pre-Employment Transition Services.

Pre-Employment Transition Services are a developmental-appropriate early intervention that aims to lead to competitive, integrated employment outcomes.

There are five different kinds of pre-employment transition services.

  • Job Exploration: Learn about different occupations, think about which ones appeal to you, and what skills you’ll need to succeed in them.
  • Work-Based-Learning: Participate in activities to learn about the workplace through work-based learning.
  • Postsecondary Education Counseling: Learn about possibilities for postsecondary education and training beyond high school.
  • Workplace Readiness Training: Gain knowledge and skills to help you get ready for a job.
  • Self-Advocacy Training, including Peer Mentoring: Learn about self-advocacy and how to obtain the adjustments you need to be successful.

MRS-2900 – Pre-Employment Transition Services Student and Parental/Guardian Referral Consent

English, Arabic, and Spanish version forms are available.

Students who are 18 years old or older and do not have a guardian may consent to receive these services on their own.

School Verification of a Student with a Condition is a form that needs evidence of the student’s disability and is completed by school employees.

Q) Who is eligible for MRS services?

Ans: Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) assists people with impairments in finding work and becoming self-sufficient. MRS is part of a nationwide network of vocational rehabilitation programs approved by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as modified, in the United States. MRS programs assist over 7,000 Michigan residents with disabilities into jobs each year.

MRS works with people in their areas through 35 field offices staffed by rehabilitation counselors with master’s degrees. In addition, each of the 100 Michigan Works! Service Centers has one or more MRS counselors on duty.

Q) Who Is Appropriate for MRS?

Ans: MRS assists people with a wide spectrum of impairments. Amputation, back disability, cancer, cerebral palsy, diabetes, epilepsy, hearing loss, heart disease, kidney disease, learning impairment, mental illness, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, paraplegia, quadriplegia, and drug misuse are some kinds of disabilities. (People who are legally blind in Michigan are handled by the Bureau of Services for the Blind.)

MRS collaborates with a variety of community organizations to receive referrals and, in many cases, provide joint rehabilitation programming. Educational institutions, health organizations, the Department of Human Services, hospitals, the Employment Service Agency, penal facilities, the Social Security Administration, independent living centers, and commercial agencies are among the entities that recommend people to MRS. MRS serves about 30% of those who are recommended by relatives or friends or who apply on their own.

Ans: If a person’s impairment prevents them from preparing for, obtaining, or retaining a work, they may be eligible for MRS assistance. In order to work, the individual needs also require vocational rehabilitation treatments.

• A physical or mental impairment; • Vocational or work-related difficulties as a result of a disability; and • A need for MRS services.

Anyone who asks for MRS assistance has the right to know whether or not they are qualified. This may sound strange, given that the majority of people who come to our office already feel they are qualified for assistance. However, your counselor must evaluate your condition and need for bureau services.

There are two reasons why determining eligibility is important:

• Determining eligibility allows us to better understand and identify your disability-related functional limits and/or job hurdles.

• The first step in building an employment strategy is to understand your limitations/barriers.

Q) What Is Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) and How Does It Work?

Ans: A rehabilitation counselor is assigned to each client that comes to MRS. They take four steps together:

1. Choosing a career objective.

The consumer chooses a career path based on his or her skills and interests. Assessments such as vocational testing, work appraisals, and employment try-outs may be required.

2. Making a strategy.

The plan specifies the services that are required as well as who will offer them. The counselor or other MRS employees will deliver certain services directly. Other agencies may be able to acquire or supply additional services.

3. Stick to the strategy.

Job-seeking skills training; job placement assistance; accommodations/assistive technology; job coaches; tools, equipment, and licenses required for work; job training; prostheses and other medical services; and support services such as interpreters, readers, and transportation are examples of services provided to the customer.

4. Achieving the objective.

The consumer and the counselor work together to achieve the ultimate aim of finding the suitable employment. After the person starts working, the counselor follows up for at least 90 days to ensure that both the employee and the company are happy. Additional assistance might be offered if necessary to assist a person in staying on the job.

Q) Who Covers the Cost of Services?

Ans: Disability tests, vocational examinations, counseling, job placement services, and job follow-up services are all provided free of charge by MRS. Other services are obtained through local governmental and private organizations. Customers are requested to contribute to the cost of some of these services if they are financially able.

Q) What is the Process for Making a Referral to MRS?

Ans: Anyone with a differently abled who wants to receive work rehabilitation assistance should contact the MRS office closest to them. Family members, hospitals, school counselors, mental health experts, social workers, churches, and other community institutions can all make referrals.

Q) What Kinds of Employer Services Are Available?

Ans: MRS also employs 65 business service representatives around the state who assist company owners and managers in resolving disability-related employment difficulties.

Helping businesses retain valuable employees who are at-risk due to the onset of a disability; referral of qualified, pre-screened job applicants matched to the employer’s requirements; reimbursement for a portion of the costs associated with training a new worker referred by MRS; assisting businesses in obtaining disability-related tax credits and deductions; providing information on employer responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act

Reasonable accommodation suggestions, ergonomic evaluations, employee counseling, job analyses, transferable skill analyses, and connecting companies with community and state resources are just a few of the options offered from MRS.
