You must fulfill all of the following conditions to be eligible for Michigan unemployment benefits:.

• Be out of work through no fault of your own.

• Be able to and willing to work full-time.

• Be actively looking for full-time work.

• Obey the regulations governing the minimum wage.

How much do Michigan unemployment benefits cost?

You might get up to $362 each week for 14 to 20 weeks.

The amount of your weekly benefit is determined by multiplying your highest base period quarter’s salary by 4.1 percent. You will also get an additional $6 per week for each dependant you claim, up to a maximum of five, however your payments cannot exceed $362.

If you had three dependents and a maximum base period of $5,000, your weekly benefits might be $223 ($5,000 x 4.1 percent = $205 Plus (3 x $6) = $223).

To determine how many weeks you could be eligible for benefits, multiply your total base period earnings by 40% and divide the result by your weekly benefit amount. You will not be entitled for compensation if your claim is found to be less than 14 weeks old. Michigan Unemployment benefits are not available for more than 20 weeks. Because weeks cannot be larger than 20, if your total base period salary are $12,000 and your weekly benefit amount is $223, you will get those benefits for 20 weeks ($12,000 x 40% = 4,800/$223 = 21.5).

How to get paid?

To get paid, you must answer a series of questions to declare (certify) that you are still jobless every TWO WEEKS.

Reporting.

While collecting Michigan unemployment benefits, you may work part-time. Include all of your gross earnings from work done during the week you’re claiming. Earnings before taxes are calculated as a percentage of total gross earnings (taxes and withholdings).

There are two payment options available.

  • Direct deposit through your bank or credit union – You will need your routing number and account number for this.
  • Debit card issued by UIA.

ONLINE CERTIFICATION.

Following your application for benefits, you will get Form UIA 1575C, Monetary Determination, which will contain information such as your weekly benefit amount, the number of weeks you are permitted, and when you may begin certifying.

You may certify online at Michigan.gov/uia by using the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM).

  • Navigate to your MiWAM UI Claim page, Account Alerts, and choose “You have benefit weeks that have not been verified – click here to Certify.”
  • Select Yes or No for the Week 1 questions.
  • Review the information and then click the SUBMIT button.
  • Answer the Week 2 questions with Yes or No.
  • Review the information and then click the SUBMIT button.

Benefit payments will be available in 2-3 business days. If you haven’t received your payment within 2-3 business days, please contact the agency via your MiWAM account or by calling 1-866-500-0017.

Certify with Phone.

You may also certify by phone, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at 1-866-638-3993.

Beginning June 7, UIA will implement a new call-in schedule for all claimants who certify over the phone with MARVIN. Claimants who testify by phone must call on the appropriate day and hour that corresponds to their Social Security Number’s last two digits (SSN). MARVIN may be contacted at 1-866-638-3993 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

IN UIA, WHAT DOES “FULL TIME” MEAN?

For the purposes of unemployment compensation, the statute does not define “full-time.” The word “full-time” offered by the individual employer involved in the claim is accepted by UIA.

CAN I GET UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS IF I WORK TEMPORARY OR PROBATIONARY?

For the purposes of unemployment benefits, payments given to a temporary or probationary employee are deemed the same as wages provided to a permanent employee. They may only be used to support a claim if the following requirements are met:

When a temporary employee makes a benefit claim,

• Earnings from temporary or short-term work are lower in the base period.

• the claimant earned enough total base period pay to submit a claim, and

• The claimant worked in a statutorily protected job.

If these requirements are satisfied, the claimant’s employer will be charged a share of the benefits based on the claimant’s pay with that employer during the base period.

IF I WORK IN A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS, CAN I GET MICHIGAN UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE?

• If you work for a sole proprietorship owned by your spouse or child, or by your parent or parents, you are ineligible for Michigan unemployment payments (if you are under the age of 18).

• You are not eligible for unemployment benefits if you work for a partnership that is fully comprised of your spouse or children, or totally comprised of your parents (if you are under the age of 18).

Michigan Unemployment benefits are available to family members who work for a family company. To be eligible for benefits, both the employer and the claimant must inform UIA of the claimant’s relationship to the firm’s owners.

CAN I GET A PERIOD OF EXTENSION IN THE NUMBER OF WEEKS I COLLECT?

If you are forced to take maternity leave, you will not be refused Michigan unemployment benefits as long as you are able to work throughout the break.

If, on the other hand, you sought a maternity leave of absence, you will not be deemed “unemployed” throughout the leave and will consequently be ineligible for unemployment benefits.

HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS?

To qualify for Michigan unemployment benefits, we look at the wages you were paid in the first four of the last five calendar quarters – the standard base period.

A person must earn at least one and a half times the highest amount of wages paid in any quarter of the base period. A person can also qualify using the Alternate Earnings Qualifier. This means you must have total base period wages of at least $20,458.00, and you must have wages in at least two calendar quarters in the base period.

If you file a new claim for benefits and your last benefit year expired within the last six calendar quarters, you must additionally satisfy the following earnings requirement:.

•             Worked after your prior benefit year began; and.

•             Been paid, by a liable employer, at least five times the last weekly benefit amount that was in effect on your prior benefit year.

•             Available for work.
